Once upon a time, on the north coast of Sumatra lived a poor woman and his son. The boy was called Malin Kundang. Malin Kundang grew up as a skillful young boy. He always helps his mother “Mom, what if I sail overseas?” asked Malin Kundang one day to his mother. Her mother didn’t agree, but Malin Kundang had made up his mind. “Mom, if I stay here, I’ll always be a poor man. I want to be a successful person,” urged Malin kundang. His mother wiped her tears, “If you really want to go, I can’t stop you. I could only pray to God for you to gain success in life,” said his mother wisely. In the next morning, Malin Kundang was ready to go. Three days ago, he met one of the successful ship’s crew. Malin was offered to join him. “Take a good care of yourself!” said Malin’s mother Before Malin stepped onto the ship. Malin’s mother hugged him tight as if she didn’t want to let him go.
It had been three months since Malin Kundang left his mother. Even though it’s been a year she had not heard any news from Malin Kundang. she kept waiting and praying for him. After several years waiting without any news, Malin Kundang’s mother was suddenly surprised by the arrival of a big ship in the pier where she usually stood to wait for her son. When the ship finally pulled over, Malin Kundang’s mother saw a man who looked wealthy stepping down a ladder along with a beautiful woman.The man was Malin Kundang, her son.
Malin’mother approached her beloved son. “Malin, you’re back!” said Malin’s mother and without hesitation, she came running to hug Malin Kundang,“I miss you so much.” But, Malin Kundang didn’t show any respond. He was ashamed to admit his own mother in front of his beautiful wife.“You’re not my Mother. I don’t know you. my mother has passed away,” said Malin Kundang. Malin Kundang’s mother take a step back, “Malin… what do you mean?? I’m your mother!” she said sadly. “take this old woman out of here,” Malin Kundang ordered his bodyguard. Malin’s mother cried as she was dragged by the bodyguard,”Malin… my son. Why do you treat your own mother like this?” "Malin Kundang ignore her. her feelings are very hurt, he cried and said," I curse you into stone! ". In a calm sea, suddenly the wind was blowing so hard and the storm came .finally, malin turned to be a stone. He was punished for not admit his own mother.

Malin Kundang agreed because she was very beautiful.
After Malin Kundang married, one day, his wife invited him to see his mother land. Malin agreed with her. Their ship anchored near the harbor of West Sumatra. Everybody heard their coming. The dweller told about it. “ Malin come back! Malin come back! He is a rich man now!” they shouted.
Malin Kundang’s mother came to the harbor and found Malin Kundang with his wife. “ Malin! Welcome to your village!” said his mother. Malin Kundang ashamed to his wife when he saw his mother in a bad clothes. He always said to his wife that he was a son of a rich man.
“ I am your mother, Malin. You don’t remember me, do you?” said his mother more.
“ Go away! I have no mother like you!” shouted Malin Kundang. Malin Kundang’s mother was very sad. She was in believe and un-believe that the man on the ship is his son. She said to God to make sure about it. “ God if he is not my son, forgive me that I have felt he is my son, but if he is my son, you are the Justest King”.
In a short time, the sky became dark, the thunder rumbled. No light then after the last thundering sound. After everything in normal condition, there was a big stone of Malin Kundang and his ship.

He usually went to sea to catch fish. After getting fish he would bring it to his mother, or sold the caught fish in the town.
One day, when Malin Kundang was sailing, he saw a merchant’s ship which was being raided by a small band of pirates. He helped the merchant. With his brave and power, Malin Kundang defeated the pirates. The merchant was so happy and thanked to him. In return the merchant asked Malin Kundang to sail with him. To get a better life, Malin Kundang agreed. He left his mother alone. Many years later, Malin Kundang became wealthy. He had a huge ship and was helped by many ship crews loading trading goods. Perfectly he had a beautiful wife too. When he was sailing his trading journey, his ship landed on a beach near a small village. The villagers recognized him. The news ran fast in the town; “Malin Kundang has become rich and now he is here”. An old woman ran to the beach to meet the new rich merchant. She was Malin Kundang’s mother. She wanted to hug him, released her sadness of being lonely after so long time. Unfortunately, when the mother came, Malin Kundang who was in front of his well dressed wife and his ship crews denied meeting that old lonely woman. For three times her mother begged Malin Kundang and for three times he yelled at her. At last Malin Kundang said to her “Enough, old woman! I have never had a mother like you, a dirty and ugly woman!” After that he ordered his crews to set sail. He would leave the old mother again but in that time she was full of both sadness and angriness.
Finally, enraged, she cursed Malin Kundang that he would turn into a stone if he didn’t apologize. Malin Kundang just laughed and really set sail.
In the quiet sea, suddenly a thunderstorm came. His huge ship was wrecked and it was too late for Malin Kundang to apologize. He was thrown by the wave out of his ship. He fell on a small island. It was really too late for him to avoid his curse. Suddenly, he turned into a stone.

Malin Kundang grew up as a skillful young boy. He always helps his mother to earn some money. One day, Malin Kundang decide going to overseas and promise to come back.
After several years had gone by, Malin Kudang finally decide to return to his village. He arrived wearing fine clothes and traveling on one of his ships. Someone arriving in such splendor was uncommon to the villagers, so many of them went down to the harbor to view the sight.
One of the villagers recognized Malin Kundang form a scar that he had received while playing as a child. Upon recognizing the mark, the villager went to tell Malin Kundang's mother that her son had returned. Excitedly, she went to the shore and recognized her son the minute her eyes fell on him.
When the older woman called him her son, he refused to believe that he head such an old woman as a mother. His disbelief was heightened when his wife questioned why he had not told her that he had an elderly, poor mother.
In an alternate translation, Malin Kundang was on the ship with just his crew. When his mother attempted to embrace him, he was too embarrassed by her ragged appearance to acknowledge her and instead, had one of them carry her away.
Distraught and finally realizing he son's wickedness, Malin Kundang's mother gave up on her son's acknowledging her and prayed to her god to punish her son for his behavior.
The day after his mother's prayer, Malin Kudang sailed out of the village. Shortly thereafter, the ships was met by a violent storm. Malin Kundang believed the storm was his god's and nature's ways of punishing him for his mistreatment of his mother.
He felt guilty about his behavior towards her, asked for forgiveness, and began to pray. However, his repentance was too late, for the ship was destroyed at sea. But, in some translations of the tale, Malin Kundang was turned into coral. In other, the ship, the crew, and he become rock formations that are still standing.

Malin Kundang immediately release her mother's arms and pushed it down. "Hey woman! How dare you claim to be my mother. Don’t you see? I’m a rich man, and you? You’re just an old, poor, and dirty woman!" said Malin Kundang to his mother. Malin Kundang pretended not to recognize his mother, embarrassed by her mother was old and wearing tattered clothes. "Is she your mother?",asked his wife. "No, she was just a beggar who pretended as my mother to get my property," said Malin to his wife. She is very sad. She is not expected Him to be a rebellious child. And then, she said while crying, "Oh God, if he is my son, I curse he became a rock". Suddenly, a thunderstorm came. Not long after that, Malin's body slowly becomes stiff and eventually finally shaped into a rock.
